What can the federal government really be doing to help Main Street? Should it?
Have had multiple conversations the last few weeks with small business owners and entrepreneurs who feel that the federal government has done and is doing too much for the "big guys" and not enough for Main Street in smaller communities. I've spoken with several legislators at both the state and federal level who refer me to the recent UDSA loan programs as their most direct way to help small business. When I talk with local bankers they say that access to capital is not the issue. The issue is that no one is borrowing. Small business owners are not borrowing because they are not sure they can pay it back. So does it make sense for us to push for federal "no-interest" loans for small business owners with a 5-10 year pay back period? What about federal grants for small businesses in rural communities strictly for job retention?
